TINUBU SIGNS BILL TO UPGRADE KADUNA POLYTECHNIC TO UNIVERSITY

President Bola Tinubu has signed a bill upgrading the Federal Polytechnic, Kaduna, to the Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies, Kaduna. The development marks a change in the institution’s status and is expected to expand its role in technical and vocational education. The announcement was made on Friday, October 16, 2026, in a statement by Daniel Amos, the lawmaker representing Jema’a/Sanga federal constituency in Kaduna State.

Following the development, Amos commended Tajudeen Abbas, Speaker of the House of Representatives, who sponsored the bill. The lawmaker praised Abbas for his role in advancing the legislation, describing his leadership as a demonstration of commitment to education and national development. “Speaker Tajudeen’s leadership on this bill demonstrates purposeful commitment to education and national development,” Amos said.

Amos, who chairs the House Services Committee, said the institution’s transition to a university would help reposition technical and vocational education in the country. He explained that the new university would promote skills development and contribute to national development. His comments highlighted the expected role of the institution in providing education focused on technical knowledge, vocational training and the development of practical skills.

The lawmaker also described Tinubu’s assent to the bill as a “clear testament” to the President’s commitment to educational reform and human capital development under the Renewed Hope Agenda. According to Amos, the development reflects the administration’s stated commitment to improving education and expanding opportunities for Nigerians. He added that the Green Chamber would support the “smooth take-off” of the newly established university.

Amos further stated that the new university would strengthen research capacity and improve the employability of graduates in Kaduna State and other parts of the country. He expressed the expectation that the institution would contribute to the development of skilled graduates and support research activities. The transition is also expected to broaden the institution’s contribution to technical and vocational education beyond its existing status as a polytechnic.

The bill’s signing was announced on October 16, 2026, with Amos acknowledging the roles played by President Tinubu and Speaker Abbas in the process. The institution will now be known as the Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies, Kaduna, following its upgrade from the Federal Polytechnic, Kaduna. The announcement focused on the expected benefits of the change, including skills development, research and improved graduate employability.
