APC: NO THREAT TO CONVENTION

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has confirmed that its national convention in Abuja this Saturday will proceed as planned, despite a court challenge by aspirant Fubara Dagogo. National Secretary Senator Ajibola Basiru described the legal action as “spurious” and reaffirmed that the process will follow the party constitution, the Electoral Act, and internal guidelines.

Basiru noted that the position Dagogo is contesting—a Southsouth zonal vice chairmanship—is determined at zonal congresses, not at the convention. The party has screened and cleared key leaders, including National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, Basiru, National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka, and other National Working Committee members, to participate in the election.

The convention is expected to host approximately 7,200 delegates. Zonal congresses across the six geopolitical zones will also be held to elect zonal vice chairmen and executives. Basiru emphasised that the convention will strengthen internal cohesion, activate party structures, and consolidate grassroots and national operations.

Vice President Kashim Shettima praised Governor Dauda Lawal’s defection to the APC in Zamfara State, saying it has made the party stronger and more united. Other top officials, including the Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau and House Speaker Tajuddeen Abbas, welcomed the development, describing Zamfara as now fully under APC leadership.

In addition, the APC launched a new digital media initiative aimed at reaching 100 million Nigerians and 400 million people globally. The strategy, unveiled during the inaugural meeting of the National Convention Sub-Committee on Digital and New Media in Abuja, will employ real-time streaming, interactive social media, and localized content to showcase the party’s democratic credentials. Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago urged members to use the platform to communicate the party’s achievements and broader “Renewed Hope” agenda.

Information Minister Mohammed Idris described the convention as a milestone that will reinforce the party’s democratic processes and internal structures, while highlighting the APC’s growth in membership and institutional capacity since August 2023.
