Troops of the Nigerian Army operating under Operation HADIN KAI have arrested a suspected member of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in Munguno Local Government Area of Borno State, recovering a Starlink satellite internet system and other communication devices during the operation.
The suspect was intercepted by personnel of the 212 Battalion while carrying out surveillance and stop-and-search operations at Delta One after his movements reportedly aroused suspicion.
A search conducted by the troops led to the recovery of a Starlink satellite internet terminal, a Wi-Fi router with six access points, a mobile phone, and ₦1,000 in cash.
During initial questioning, the suspect reportedly told security operatives that he runs an internet service business in his community and that the equipment was intended for legitimate business activities.
However, security officials said the circumstances surrounding his movement and possession of the communication devices raised concerns, leading to his transfer for further investigation.
The suspect, along with the recovered equipment, has been handed over to the Military Intelligence Brigade (7 MIB) for detailed profiling and intelligence analysis to determine whether he has any connection with ISWAP or Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JAS) terrorist groups operating in the North-East.
Investigators are expected to examine the intended use of the Starlink device, identify any possible accomplices, and establish whether the equipment had been used or was meant to facilitate terrorist communications, coordination, or logistics.
The arrest is part of ongoing operations by Operation HADIN KAI to dismantle terrorist communication networks, logistics chains, and support systems across the North-East as security forces intensify efforts against insurgent groups.
