The House of Representatives has directed President Bola Tinubu to instruct the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, to unfreeze all accounts belonging to the National Social Investment Programmes Agency (NSIPA) within 72 hours.
This resolution was reached during a plenary session held on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, following deliberations on the impact of the agency’s current challenges.
Lawmakers argued that unfreezing the accounts is essential for the smooth resumption of NSIPA’s operations, which are critical for poverty alleviation, youth empowerment, and promoting economic inclusivity across Nigeria.
The lower chamber expressed concern that despite the importance of NSIPA’s programmes, the agency’s functionality has been stifled by administrative hurdles, insufficient funding, and the freezing of its accounts.
The suspension of NSIPA’s activities and the freezing of its accounts followed allegations of financial mismanagement by its handlers, prompting investigations by anti-corruption and security agencies.
Lawmakers emphasized that revitalizing NSIPA’s programmes is crucial to addressing Nigeria’s socio-economic challenges and urged the prompt resolution of the matter to prevent further delays in implementing key interventions.
