President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Nwakuche Sylvester Ndidi as the Acting Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), effective December 15, 2024.
The appointment follows the conclusion of the tenure of the outgoing Controller-General, Haliru Nababa, who was appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari on February 18, 2021.
In a statement issued on Friday, Ja’afaru Ahmed, Secretary of the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire, and Immigration Board, announced the appointment and commended Nababa’s leadership.
A Distinguished Career
Sylvester Ndidi, born on November 26, 1966, hails from Oguta in Imo State. Until his new appointment, he served as the Deputy Controller-General in charge of the Training and Staff Development Directorate. A fellow of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Ndidi also holds the national honor of Member of the Federal Republic (MFR).
Farewell Ceremony for Haliru Nababa
Haliru Nababa was honored in a colorful pulling-out ceremony on Friday. During the event, Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, praised Nababa for his visionary leadership and transformative contributions to the NCoS.
“His tenure was marked by significant strides in advancing the core mandate of reforming, rehabilitating, and reintegrating inmates into society in line with the government’s vision for public safety and justice,” Tunji-Ojo remarked.
Nababa Reflects on His Service
In his valedictory address, Nababa expressed gratitude to President Tinubu and the Minister of Interior for the opportunity to serve. He recounted his journey, which began in 1990 when he enlisted in the then Nigerian Prisons Service, culminating in his appointment as Controller-General on May 10, 2021.
As he transitions into retirement, Nababa leaves behind a legacy of service and reform in the Nigerian Correctional Service.
