BVAS Upgrade May Require Hardware Changes, Could Slow System — INEC’s Bayode
The Director of ICT at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Dr Lawrence Bayode, has said upgrading the Android operating system on the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) devices could require hardware changes and potentially affect their performance.
Bayode explained that the BVAS devices were procured in 2021 with Android 10, with their specifications specifically designed to operate efficiently on that version.
He noted that beyond the security features provided by Android 10, INEC also has additional security measures built into the devices.
“Apart from the security features of Android 10, we also have our own security system. The BVAS devices were procured with Android 10 in 2021, and their specifications were designed to run efficiently on that version,” Bayode said.
According to him, upgrading the devices to a newer Android version would require upgrades to other components, including the RAM and other hardware, to maintain optimal performance.
“Upgrading to a higher Android version would require upgrading several other components, including the RAM and other hardware, to ensure the devices continue to perform efficiently without slowing down the system,” he added.
