Democratic Republic of Congo’s famous football supporter, Michel Nkuka Mboladinga, popularly known as “Lumumba Vea,” has finally made his long-awaited appearance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after missing his country’s opening match due to Ebola-related quarantine restrictions.

Mboladinga, renowned for standing motionless throughout matches in tribute to Congo’s independence hero, Patrice Lumumba, returned to the stands during DR Congo’s clash against Colombia. His arrival was warmly welcomed by fans and players who regard him as a symbol of national pride and resilience.
The iconic supporter was unable to attend the Leopards’ opening World Cup fixture after being required to complete a 21-day quarantine following an Ebola outbreak in parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Health protocols imposed on travellers from affected regions delayed his journey to the tournament.

Known worldwide for his distinctive appearance and unwavering support, Mboladinga has become a football sensation by recreating the pose of a famous statue of Patrice Lumumba, Congo’s first prime minister. Dressed in vintage-style suits and standing still for the entire duration of matches, he has attracted international attention since gaining prominence during the Africa Cup of Nations.
The Congolese Football Federation reportedly supported his trip to the World Cup after requests from players and supporters who believed the tournament would be incomplete without the presence of the country’s most recognisable fan.
Although DR Congo suffered a narrow defeat to Colombia, Mboladinga’s return provided an emotional boost for supporters and added another memorable chapter to his remarkable story. His presence at the tournament has continued to draw admiration from football fans around the world, further cementing his status as one of the World Cup’s most unique and beloved supporters.
