FG Sets Up Gas-to-Power Committee to Tackle Electricity Supply Challenges

The Federal Government has inaugurated a Gas-to-Power Monitoring Committee in a renewed effort to address ongoing gas supply constraints affecting electricity generation across Nigeria.

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, who spoke at the inauguration in Abuja, described the initiative as a “decisive and strategic step” aimed at improving power generation and strengthening the country’s electricity value chain.

He noted that gas-fired plants account for about 80 per cent of Nigeria’s power generation, but have continued to face serious challenges, including inadequate gas supply, pipeline vandalism, unpaid debts to gas suppliers, and weak coordination among stakeholders in the sector.

According to him, these persistent issues have limited generation capacity and contributed to unreliable electricity supply across the country.

Adelabu said the new committee represents the government’s determination to move away from long-standing inefficiencies in the sector and implement practical solutions that will improve performance.

He explained that the committee was formed following discussions at the first quarter 2026 Ministerial Power Sector Working Group meeting, where stakeholders identified key bottlenecks such as infrastructure gaps, liquidity challenges, and pricing disputes.

The committee is expected to focus on ensuring the repair of damaged pipelines, improving payment of outstanding debts to gas producers, and addressing commercial and operational issues affecting gas supply to power plants.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Power, represented by the Director of Distribution, said the initiative aligns with efforts to urgently resolve structural problems in the electricity sector and improve overall economic productivity.

He highlighted infrastructure deficits, vandalism, and poor coordination as major factors limiting stable electricity generation in the country.

The Federal Government expressed optimism that the new framework will help stabilise gas supply and improve power availability nationwide.
