FG TO TERMINATE DELAYED RENEWED HOPE HOUSING ESTATES CONTRACTS

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to revoke contracts under the Renewed Hope Housing Estates programme from contractors who fail to meet agreed project deadlines and standards.

This was disclosed by the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Dr Muttaka Rabe Darma, during an inspection of an ongoing housing project in Damaturu.

According to him, the project, which is part of the Renewed Hope Housing initiative launched in 2024, has shown poor progress despite its early start. Although the foundation was laid on May 24, 2024, the development is currently only about 40 percent complete two years later, despite a contractual completion timeline of four months.

He described the situation as unacceptable, stressing that the ministry will conduct a nationwide review of all contractors handling similar housing projects. Defaulting companies, he said, will face strict penalties, including contract termination.

The minister also dismissed claims that funding challenges were responsible for delays, noting that contractors are required to formally request variations or extensions when necessary rather than abandon projects.

He further warned that any contractor who fails to follow proper procedures or meet obligations will be sanctioned. The Yobe housing project, valued at over N5 billion, was highlighted as a major national investment that must not be wasted.C
