FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) have directed the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to suspend its ongoing electoral process pending a joint assessment of the crisis within the federation.
The decision puts further steps in the NFF election on hold, including the elective congress scheduled for September 27, 2026, in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
The intervention follows recent developments within the NFF, including the resignation of President Ibrahim Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and members of the federation’s Executive Committee.
FIFA and CAF said they are assessing the legal, governance, administrative and electoral implications of the situation before deciding on the next steps.
The two football governing bodies are also planning a joint mission to Abuja, where they will meet representatives of the NFF, its electoral bodies, members of the federation and officials of the Federal Government, including the National Sports Commission.
FIFA and CAF stressed that no final decision has been reached regarding the issues under review and that the suspension is intended to maintain the status quo while consultations and assessments continue.
