A fire outbreak at the Alaba Rago Market in the Ojo area of Lagos State has destroyed goods worth millions of naira. The incident occurred early Wednesday morning, leaving traders counting their losses.
The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed that the fire started around midnight. Responding to distress calls, LASEMA activated the State’s emergency response plan and deployed its Emergency Response Team from Igando to the scene.
“When the team arrived, several makeshift shops were already engulfed in flames,” Oke-Osanyintolu said. Firefighters from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, alongside LASEMA personnel and other emergency workers, collaborated to contain the fire.
Margaret Adeseye, the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, commended the swift response, which prevented the fire from spreading to adjacent properties.
This incident follows a similar fire outbreak on November 30 at a spare parts market in the Idumota area of Lagos, where property worth millions of naira was also destroyed. In both cases, no casualties or injuries were reported.
Authorities are continuing their investigations to determine the cause of the Alaba Rago Market fire.
