The First Lady of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu, has officially launched the North-West zone of the “Energize Commercialization Now” (ECoN) initiative in Kano, as part of a national drive to boost innovation, industrial growth, and economic development.

The programme, introduced by the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, is aimed at turning research findings and creative ideas into practical, market-ready products that can drive enterprise growth and job creation across the country.
Speaking at the launch, Oluremi Tinubu said the initiative supports the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Tinubu, emphasizing the need for Nigeria to shift from untapped potential to a fully innovation-driven economy.

She noted that while the country has no shortage of creativity—especially among young people and within academic institutions—many ideas fail to scale due to structural and developmental challenges. The new programme, she explained, is designed to bridge that gap by supporting innovators and strengthening the ecosystem for commercialization.

The First Lady also highlighted the importance of inclusivity, urging stakeholders to ensure that women and young people are actively involved in the innovation and technology space, stressing that broader participation would lead to job creation and stronger communities.

Government officials, including the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, were commended for driving the initiative, which is expected to enhance Nigeria’s global competitiveness in science and technology.
During the visit, she also joined Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf in inaugurating a 118-kilometre road project named in her honour, which is expected to improve transportation and stimulate economic activity in the region.
