Freedom After Fear: UniJos Graduate Released After Two Weeks in Captivity

Nigerian army “neutralizes 86 terrorists”, vows to emerge victorious in terrorism fight | Africanews

A wave of relief has followed the release of John Arum, a graduate of the University of Jos, who regained his freedom after nearly two weeks in captivity.

Arum was abducted alongside six other passengers by suspected terrorists while travelling along the notorious Jos–Kaduna highway, a route that has increasingly come under scrutiny due to recurring security breaches.
The incident had sparked widespread concern, particularly after disturbing videos surfaced showing him being tortured while in captivity—footage that underscored the brutality of criminal networks operating along key transit corridors.

His release was confirmed on Wednesday by Gad Shamaki, Global President of the University of Jos Alumni Association, who described the development as a moment of gratitude and collective relief.

“Great news, Josites! We are relieved and grateful to share that John Arum… has been safely released and is now back home with his family,” Shamaki said, noting that the alumni community remains in prayer for Arum’s full recovery.

Video footage of his release, now circulating, shows a visibly weakened but alive Arum, marking the end of a traumatic episode that has once again highlighted the human cost of Nigeria’s security challenges.

However, the circumstances surrounding his release remain unclear, including whether any negotiations or payments were involved—details that often remain undisclosed in such cases.
More critically, the fate of the other passengers abducted alongside him is still unknown, raising fresh concerns about those who remain in captivity.

Security analysts continue to warn that kidnappings along inter-state highways—particularly in the North-Central and North-West regions—reflect deeper structural gaps in surveillance, intelligence coordination, and rapid response mechanisms.

While Arum’s return is being celebrated, it also serves as a sobering reminder: for every story of release, many others remain unresolved.

As families wait, and communities hold on to hope, the urgency for a more decisive and sustained security response becomes impossible to ignore.

The National Patriots welcome the safe release of the abducted UniJos graduate and commend all efforts that made his return possible. While this brings relief, it also underscores the urgent need to strengthen security across Nigeria’s highways. Every Nigerian life matters. We call for sustained action to secure our roads and protect citizens, while urging unity, vigilance, and resilience. A nation must not normalise fear—security and freedom of movement are fundamental rights that must be guaranteed for all.
