FRESH GUNMEN ATTACK ON NIPSS LEAVES ONE DEAD, RAISES NEW SECURITY CONCERNS

Security personnel successfully repelled an attempted attack on the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, Plateau State, on Wednesday night, killing one of the suspected attackers during a gun battle.

The incident reportedly occurred at about 11:00 p.m. when armed men attempted to breach the institute’s outer security perimeter.

According to the institute’s Head of Public Affairs, Osime Samuel, security operatives responded swiftly to the attack, engaging the assailants in an exchange of gunfire that eventually forced them to retreat.

He said one of the attackers was killed during the confrontation, while the others escaped, with some believed to have sustained gunshot wounds.

Samuel confirmed that the gunmen were unable to gain access to the institute and that participants of the Senior Executive Course, staff members, residents, and facilities within the premises were unharmed.

The attempted attack comes just days after another failed assault on the institute, prompting authorities to strengthen security around the facility.

In response to growing security concerns, NIPSS has expanded its security measures by deploying more armed personnel, increasing night patrols, tightening access control, and enhancing collaboration with other security agencies carrying out joint operations in Kuru and neighbouring communities.

The additional security measures were introduced following intelligence reports warning of increased threats against critical national institutions in Plateau State.

Authorities said security assessments are continuing to identify and address any vulnerabilities while ensuring the institute remains adequately protected.

The latest attack has further highlighted ongoing security challenges in parts of Plateau State, where government authorities have continued efforts to improve the protection of strategic public institutions.
