FULL LIST: 10 CURRENT LONGEST-SERVING MANAGERS IN EUROPE’S TOP FIVE LEAGUES

A review of managerial tenures across Europe’s top five football leagues shows that long-term coaching stability is becoming increasingly uncommon, with only a small number of managers remaining at their clubs for extended periods.

At the top of the list is Frank Schmidt, who has been in charge of Heidenheim for 18 years and six months, making him the longest-serving manager in the top European leagues. His leadership has taken the club from lower-division football to the German top flight and even into European competition.

According to a ranking compiled ahead of the 2025–26 season, several other managers also feature among the longest-serving in elite European football.

Christophe Pelissier has spent three years and five months at Auxerre, where he has worked to stabilise the club after promotion and relegation battles in recent seasons.

Ernesto Valverde, in his third spell at Athletic Bilbao, has spent three years and nine months in charge and is set to leave at the end of the 2025–26 season after guiding the club to major achievements, including a Copa del Rey triumph and strong European performances.

Eddie Howe has been at Newcastle United for four years and five months, transforming the club from relegation struggles to Champions League qualification and a domestic cup victory, although recent form has placed him under pressure.

Michel Sanchez has spent four years and nine months at Girona, leading them from Spain’s second division to a historic Champions League qualification campaign.

Marco Silva, also with four years and nine months at Fulham, has overseen promotion from the Championship and consistent Premier League stability.

Manuel Pellegrini has been at Real Betis for five years and eight months, guiding the club to European competition and domestic cup success.

Mikel Arteta has managed Arsenal for six years and eight months, winning early silverware but facing growing scrutiny due to a lack of recent trophies despite consistent progress.

Pep Guardiola has spent nine years and nine months at Manchester City, winning multiple league titles and a Champions League trophy while establishing a dominant era in English football.

Diego Simeone, with 14 years and three months at Atletico Madrid, remains one of Europe’s most enduring and influential managers, continuing to compete at the highest level.

The data highlights a growing contrast in modern football between rapid managerial turnover and a small group of long-serving coaches who have built long-term projects at their clubs.
