FULL LIST: US Ends Temporary Protected Status for Four African Countries
The administration of US President Donald Trump has terminated Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for nationals of several countries, including Somalia, South Sudan and Cameroon, as part of its broader review of the humanitarian immigration programme.
According to updates published by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), Somalia’s TPS designation ended on August 14, 2026, while South Sudan’s designation was terminated effective August 7, 2026.
The decisions followed reviews of conditions in the affected countries by the US government.
USCIS stated that former Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem determined that Somalia no longer met the statutory requirements for TPS.
“After reviewing country conditions and consulting with the appropriate U.S. government agencies, former Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem determined that Somalia no longer met the conditions for its designation for Temporary Protected Status,” the agency said.
A similar decision was reached regarding South Sudan, with USCIS announcing that its TPS designation had been terminated effective August 7.
TPS is a temporary humanitarian protection granted to eligible nationals of certain countries already living in the United States when conditions such as armed conflict, natural disasters or other extraordinary circumstances make it unsafe for them to return home.
Beneficiaries of the programme are generally protected from deportation and may obtain employment authorisation. They may also be eligible for travel authorisation during the period of their designation.
However, TPS does not provide recipients with permanent residency or automatically grant them another immigration status.
The termination of TPS also does not necessarily mean that every affected individual will immediately be deported. Some beneficiaries may have another valid immigration status or qualify for a different form of immigration protection.

USCIS also noted that the TPS status of some countries remains affected by ongoing legal proceedings.
For Ethiopia, the agency said its TPS termination was stayed by a federal judge in Massachusetts in January 2026 while the US government considered its next steps.
Court proceedings have similarly affected the implementation of TPS terminations involving Honduras, Nepal and Nicaragua.
The latest decisions represent another step in the Trump administration’s broader effort to reassess TPS designations and tighten immigration protections for foreign nationals living in the United States.
