#Governor Zulum Inaugurates International Cattle Market and Key Infrastructure in Banki

Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State has inaugurated the International Cattle Market in Banki, Bama Local Government Area, a project aimed at revitalizing trade and boosting economic growth in the region. The market, covering 450m x 450m with a 1.8 km perimeter fence, is designed to enhance cross-border commerce with neighboring Cameroon and Chad.

During the inauguration ceremony, Governor Zulum highlighted the market’s significance in stimulating economic activity, creating jobs, and restoring livelihoods in a conflict-affected area. The facility includes 12 large ruminant sheds, three small ruminant sheds, lock-up shops, market stalls, water supply facilities, and an administrative block.

Zulum remarked, “This market now serves as a vital hub for trade between Borno State, the Far North Region of Cameroon, and Chad. Revitalizing international border markets remains a priority for my administration to restore livelihoods and accelerate economic recovery.”

The inauguration drew international attention, with Midjiyawa Bakari, Governor of the Far North Region of Cameroon, in attendance, emphasizing the market’s potential to strengthen economic ties between Nigeria and Cameroon.

Supporting Projects for Community Development

In addition to the cattle market, Governor Zulum unveiled several other infrastructure projects in Banki. These include:

  • A 20-classroom day secondary school equipped with laboratories.
  • Three units of 3-bedroom internal staff quarters and five blocks of ten 2-bedroom teachers’ quarters.
  • A Government Lodge to accommodate visiting dignitaries and officials.

In a groundbreaking initiative, Zulum approved an admission quota for primary school pupils from two Cameroonian communities—Amchide and Limani—enabling them to continue their education at the newly inaugurated secondary school in Banki. He stated, “We are introducing student exchange programs to promote cultural understanding and enhance international relations.”

The Ministry of Education has been directed to implement these quotas for the 2025/2026 academic session, strengthening ties between communities on both sides of the border.

Acknowledgments and Attendees

The Shehu of Bama, Umar Ibn Kyari, and the Chairman of the Bama Reconstruction Committee, Engr. Lawan Abba Wakilbe, commended Zulum for his commitment to the region’s economic recovery and community development.

Distinguished guests at the event included Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan, House of Representatives members Dr. Zainab Gimba and Engr. Bukar Talba, as well as officials from Cameroon, such as the Attorney-General of the Far North Region and Kaltume Midjiyawa, wife of the governor of the Far North Region.

This series of initiatives underscores Governor Zulum’s dedication to fostering economic growth, improving livelihoods, and promoting cross-border cooperation in the Lake Chad region.
