IGP WARNS POLICE OFFICERS AGAINST UNAUTHORISED SOCIAL MEDIA ACTIVITIES

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has directed officers and personnel of the Nigeria Police Force to refrain from engaging in unauthorised social media activities that could damage the integrity, professionalism and public image of the Force.

The directive was announced through a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Iniedu, following growing concerns over the increasing number of police personnel creating videos, conducting live broadcasts and posting content on social media while in uniform or in situations that clearly identify them as members of the Force.

According to the police chief, while social media remains an important platform for communication and public engagement, its use by serving officers must comply strictly with existing laws, regulations and the Nigeria Police Force Social Media Policy.

The IGP emphasised that officers are prohibited from creating, posting or sharing unauthorised content while in police uniform, publicly commenting on official police matters, disclosing sensitive operational information, or using their status as police officers for personal promotion, entertainment or commercial purposes.

Disu warned that any conduct capable of bringing the Force into disrepute or undermining its professional standards would not be tolerated. He subsequently directed Commissioners of Police, Heads of Departments, Commanders and other supervisory officers nationwide to sensitise personnel under their command and ensure strict compliance with the directive.

The police boss further stated that supervisory officers would be held accountable for any failure to take disciplinary action against personnel who violate the regulations.

As part of enforcement measures, the Force Intelligence Department (FID) and the Professional Standards Department (X-Squad) have been tasked with intensifying monitoring of social media platforms to identify officers whose activities fall short of the ethical and professional standards expected of members of the Nigeria Police Force.

The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to discipline, professionalism and responsible public communication, assuring Nigerians of its dedication to maintaining public trust and protecting the integrity of the institution.
