INEC SET TO ADDRESS NIGERIANS AS 2027 ELECTIONS ENTER 100-DAY COUNTDOWN

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is set to hold a world press conference as Nigeria’s 2027 general elections enter the final 100-day countdown.

The briefing is expected to provide Nigerians and other stakeholders with updates on the commission’s preparations for the forthcoming elections.

The 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027, while the governorship and State House of Assembly elections are scheduled for February 6, 2027.

With the presidential and National Assembly elections approaching, INEC’s planned engagement comes at a critical stage in the electoral process.

The commission is expected to use the press conference to address issues surrounding its level of preparedness, ongoing electoral activities and measures being put in place to ensure a credible and transparent election.

INEC has already undertaken several activities ahead of the 2027 polls, including the Continuous Voter Registration exercise and subsequent efforts to clean and update the national voters’ register.

The commission has also announced that newly issued Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) will be available for collection from October 9, 2026.

According to INEC, the three phases of the Continuous Voter Registration exercise produced 10,772,421 new registrants, subject to verification through the Automated Biometric Identification System.

The commission has said the PVC collection exercise is an important part of its preparations, particularly at the grassroots level, where eligible voters must be able to access their cards ahead of election day.

INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, has also embarked on zonal readiness assessments to identify operational challenges and address potential bottlenecks before the elections.

The commission has stressed the importance of neutrality and professionalism among its officials, noting that the conduct of personnel at local government areas, registration centres and polling units will be critical to public confidence in the electoral process.

The upcoming press conference is therefore expected to provide further clarification on the commission’s preparations as political parties and candidates intensify their activities ahead of the 2027 elections.

As the countdown reaches 100 days, attention is increasingly turning to INEC’s ability to deliver an election that is free, fair, credible and widely accepted by Nigerians and other stakeholders.
