Global Outrage as Leaders Condemn Trump’s Attack on Pope Leo XIV

Strong international reactions have followed remarks by Donald Trump against Pope Leo XIV, with several world leaders describing the comments as offensive and inappropriate.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni led the criticism, calling Trump’s remarks “unacceptable.” She stressed that the Pope, as head of the Catholic Church, has every right to speak on global issues, especially matters of peace and war.

The controversy began after Trump launched a series of attacks on the Pope over his stance on the ongoing conflict involving Iran. In a social media post, Trump described the pontiff as “weak on crime” and “terrible for foreign policy,” while also accusing him of supporting positions he disagreed with on global security.

Tensions escalated further when Trump shared an AI-generated image portraying himself in a Christ-like manner, a move that drew widespread backlash from religious and political figures alike.

Iran also joined in condemning the remarks. President Masoud Pezeshkian described the comments as disrespectful not only to the Pope but also to religious values, stressing that such actions are unacceptable to people of faith.

Similarly, officials in Europe voiced concern. A senior aide to Polish President Karol Nawrocki criticised the remarks, saying they crossed the line and insulted Catholics worldwide.

Despite the backlash, Trump has refused to apologise and continues to defend his position, insisting that the Pope should stay out of political matters.

In response, Pope Leo XIV maintained a calm stance, saying he is not afraid of the criticism and will continue to speak out against war and promote peace. He also made it clear that he has no intention of engaging in a direct public confrontation with the U.S. president.

The clash highlights a growing divide between political leadership and religious authority on global issues, particularly the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, with both sides holding firm to their positions.
