The Ogun State Government and other relevant stakeholders have been urged to strengthen efforts aimed at empowering youths, supporting entrepreneurship and creating opportunities for persons with disabilities (PWDs).
The call was made on Wednesday during the 2026 International Youth Day celebration, which was held under the theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspiration,” with the sub-theme, “Empowering Youths, Women and Persons With Disabilities Through Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Inclusive Economic Opportunities.”
International Youth Day is observed globally every August 12 to draw attention to issues affecting young people, promote youth development and recognise their role as drivers of positive change.
Speaking at the event in Abeokuta, the Chief Executive Officer of Edfrica, Dr Odumusi Emmanuel, called for stronger collaboration among government agencies, private organisations and development partners to create more opportunities for young people and persons with disabilities.
Emmanuel stressed the importance of including persons with disabilities in development programmes, noting that they are an important part of society and should not be left behind.
He observed that while government policies and funding opportunities are available, poor implementation and inadequate support often prevent such initiatives from achieving their full potential.
The doctor also encouraged young people to remain focused and committed despite the economic difficulties facing the country. Drawing from his personal experience, he urged youths to invest in themselves and their future, stressing that success often requires patience, sacrifice and perseverance.
He said young people should continue working towards their goals despite the challenges, hunger and stress they may encounter along the way.
Speaking on behalf of the participants, Temitope Ajao, a civil servant, and Grace Animasaun commended the stakeholders for organising the programme.
They appealed to the Ogun State Government to pay greater attention to persons with disabilities by ensuring their inclusion in government programmes, policies and development initiatives.
They also called for the proper implementation of disability laws and policies to improve the welfare and protect the rights of persons with disabilities, particularly women.
According to them, greater inclusion would provide PWDs with more opportunities to participate actively in society, contribute to their communities and improve their standard of living.
