#JUST IN: Senate Declares Okpebholo’s Seat Vacant, Directs INEC to Conduct By-election

The Senate has officially declared the seat of Senator Monday Okpebholo, representing Edo Central Senatorial District, vacant.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio made the announcement during Tuesday’s plenary after reading a letter from Minority Leader Abba Moro. The letter requested the declaration of vacancy following Okpebholo’s inauguration as Governor of Edo State.

Okpebholo, who was elected governor in September and sworn into office in December, vacated his senatorial position, leaving Edo Central without representation in the Senate.

Moro, in his letter, cited Paragraph D of Section 68 of the Nigerian Constitution, which states that a senator’s seat becomes vacant upon assuming another elective office.

“I write to bring to your attention Paragraph D of Section 68 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended, that the seat of Senator Monday Okpebholo, representing Edo Central Senatorial District, has become vacant.

“This vacancy has become necessary following Senator Monday Okpebholo’s inauguration as Governor of Edo State. In accordance with the Constitution, his seat is now deemed vacant,” the letter read.

Moro further urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately organize a by-election to fill the vacant seat.

Following the declaration, Akpabio directed INEC to proceed with arrangements for a fresh election.

“In line with the Constitution, the seat of Edo Central Senatorial District is hereby declared vacant, and INEC is invited to conduct a by-election to fill the position,” Akpabio stated.

Okpebholo’s Farewell to the Senate

In a heartfelt valedictory speech, Okpebholo expressed gratitude to his colleagues, reflecting on his journey in the 10th Senate since June 2023. He praised the camaraderie and support he received during his tenure and throughout his gubernatorial campaign.

“Distinguished colleagues, this is quite emotional for me. From the moment I joined this 10th Senate, every moment has been memorable. Today, I stand as Governor of Edo State, but the support, advice, and prayers from my colleagues here were pivotal,” he said.

Okpebholo also highlighted the warm relationships he built in the Senate, acknowledging Senate President Akpabio, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, Senate Majority Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, and other lawmakers for their contributions to his success.

“Even as Governor, the memories of the 10th Senate will linger with me. My experiences here have fueled my passion for good governance in my new role,” he added.

The Senate’s decision paves the way for the electoral commission to initiate the process of selecting a new representative for Edo Central Senatorial District.
