KANO GOVERNOR YUSUF ORDERS AIDES SEEKING ELECTIVE OFFICES TO RESIGN BY MARCH 31

The Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has instructed all political appointees in his administration who plan to contest in upcoming elections to resign by March 31, 2026. The directive, communicated via an official circular signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ibrahim, aims to ensure compliance with Nigeria’s electoral laws.

The circular cites Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act 2026, which mandates that certain public officials step down before participating in elections or party primaries. This measure is intended to maintain neutrality, uphold accountability, and provide a level playing field for all aspirants.

All Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) in the state have been instructed to widely publicize the directive and ensure strict adherence. The governor’s order aligns with broader national efforts to reinforce transparency and prevent the misuse of public office during election campaigns.

Similar measures have been implemented at the federal level and in other states, including Niger State, where political appointees intending to run for office were also asked to resign ahead of party primaries. The move reflects ongoing preparations across Nigeria for the 2027 general elections.
