#Lagos, FG Sign MoU to Launch Green Line Rail Project Connecting Marina to Lekki Free Trade Zone

The Lagos State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Federal Government’s Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) to initiate development on the Green Line project. This ambitious 68-kilometer rail line will connect Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone, establishing a vital transport link along one of Africa’s fastest-growing industrial corridors.

Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, announced this during a recent Citizen/Media Stakeholders forum. He emphasized the project’s importance in boosting economic activities while addressing the state’s ongoing infrastructure developments.

Omotoso highlighted that in 2024, the Lagos State Government completed 36 major road projects, including bridges and pedestrian infrastructure. Over 51 additional road projects are currently at various stages of completion across the state’s five divisions. Notable completed projects include:

  • Arowojobe Link Bridge and Approach Road, Mende, Maryland
  • Platinum Road, Igbokusu
  • Babafemi Dada Bridge and adjoining roads in Abaranje
  • Oba Dosunmu Road and Oduduwa Crescent in Ikeja GRA
  • Lekki-Epe Expressway (Phase IIA and Phase IIB).

Under the Bus Reform Initiative (BRI), Lagos is also expanding its Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) infrastructure, with major projects advancing at Abule Egba, Iyana Ipaja, Ajah, and along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway. These efforts aim to enhance public transport efficiency and reduce travel times for residents.

The Commissioner further reflected on the state’s milestone achievement in 2024 with the commissioning of the first phase of the 27-kilometer Red Line rail. This phase, which began passenger operations on October 15, 2024, connects Agbado in Ogun State to Oyingbo in Lagos, serving up to 500,000 passengers daily with eight strategically located stations and supporting infrastructure like overpasses and pedestrian bridges.

Work is also progressing on the Blue Line’s second phase, which will extend the rail service from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko. Plans are in place to integrate the Red Line with the Blue Line, further streamlining Lagos’ rail transit system.

The signing of the MoU for the Green Line project marks another bold step in the administration’s vision to deliver a world-class transportation network, ensuring seamless mobility while fostering economic growth.
