LAGOS GOVT STANDS FIRM: NO COURT HAS VOIDED MONTHLY SANITATION — ENVIRONMENT COMMISSIONER INSISTS

The Lagos State Government has announced the resumption of its monthly environmental sanitation exercise, set to take place on Saturday, April 25, 2026, across the state.

The Commissioner for the Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, made the announcement on Friday, stating that the exercise remains valid and has not been stopped by any court ruling, contrary to claims circulating in some quarters.

In a statement shared via his X account, Wahab said the sanitation exercise would run between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., urging residents to actively participate in keeping the state clean.

He clarified that the state government had secured a favourable judgment at the Court of Appeal, which affirmed the legality and constitutionality of the laws guiding environmental sanitation enforcement.

Wahab dismissed suggestions that the programme had been invalidated, warning members of the public against misinformation.

He emphasized that maintaining a clean environment is a shared responsibility between government and citizens, noting that the initiative had been carefully planned over the past year.

According to him, major transport unions, which control a significant portion of vehicles operating in Lagos, have agreed to suspend operations during the sanitation period to support the exercise.

He added that government vehicles would also remain off the roads during the two-hour window.

The commissioner stated that exceptions would be made for emergencies, scheduled flights, and candidates sitting for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examinations.

He also confirmed that the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has been fully mobilized to handle waste collection, while environmental health officers will monitor compliance and issue notices to defaulters where necessary.

Wahab urged residents to take ownership of their surroundings, describing the exercise as part of efforts to build a cleaner, healthier, and flood-free Lagos.
