#Lagos State Enacts Five Landmark Laws to Protect Residents and Enhance Public Welfare

The Lagos State Government has passed five transformative laws aimed at safeguarding residents’ rights, promoting welfare, and improving security within the state. Speaking at a press conference, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Lawal Pedro, SAN, announced that the laws, recently approved by the Lagos State House of Assembly and signed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, reflect the state’s commitment to justice, safety, and progress.

The newly enacted laws include:

  1. Lagos Consumer Protection Agency Law
  2. Human Organ Harvesting and Tissue Transplant Law
  3. Lagos State Enforcement Training Institute Law
  4. Victim Assistance and Witness Protection Law
  5. Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service Law

Key Highlights of the Laws

1. Lagos Consumer Protection Agency Law

This law establishes the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency, an autonomous body dedicated to protecting residents from exploitation in commercial transactions. It mandates the investigation of unfair trade practices, consumer fraud, substandard products, and deceptive business practices.

“This law empowers Lagosians to demand accountability from businesses and ensures strict enforcement of consumer rights,” said Pedro. “It provides a platform for redress, safeguarding residents from harm and exploitation in their transactions.”

2. Human Organ Harvesting and Tissue Transplant Law

A first-of-its-kind in Lagos, this legislation addresses the growing concerns surrounding illicit organ trade and unethical medical practices. It provides a legal framework to regulate organ donation and transplantation, ensuring all procedures are conducted ethically and with proper consent.

Pedro stated: “This law is designed to prevent illegal activities related to organ trafficking while promoting ethical medical practices. It protects individuals from exploitation and coercion and ensures the medical community adheres to the highest ethical standards.”

3. Victim Assistance and Witness Protection Law

This law provides robust support systems for crime victims and witnesses, including relocation, legal aid, and counseling. It seeks to enhance the safety and wellbeing of those navigating criminal cases.

Pedro emphasized: “Through this legislation, the state offers various forms of assistance to victims and witnesses, ensuring they receive the protection and resources needed during challenging times.”

4. Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service Law

Replacing the 2015 Fire Service Law, this legislation aims to enhance fire safety measures and services across Lagos. It prescribes fire safety requirements for buildings, vehicles, and oil and gas facilities, creating a comprehensive fire prevention framework.

“This new law addresses gaps in the previous legislation and ensures fire safety standards are rigorously enforced,” Pedro noted.

5. Lagos State Enforcement Training Institute Law

Focused on enhancing professionalism among law enforcement officers, this law establishes advanced training programs to improve public safety and operational efficiency.

Pedro remarked: “This legislation equips law enforcement officers with the skills needed to better serve the public and maintain safety across Lagos State.”

Call to Action

Mr. Pedro urged residents to familiarize themselves with the new laws and actively participate in their implementation, reaffirming the Lagos State Government’s dedication to fostering an inclusive and thriving metropolis.

“These laws are a testament to our commitment to addressing the needs of Lagosians and ensuring a secure, just, and prosperous state,” he concluded.
