LAGOS UNVEILS CYBERSECURITY GUIDELINES TO STRENGTHEN DIGITAL SAFETY

The Lagos State Government has introduced new cybersecurity guidelines and a strategic framework aimed at improving digital safety for businesses, government institutions, and residents across the state.

The initiative, announced in a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, and made available on Monday, is part of efforts to position Lagos as a secure and globally competitive digital hub.

According to the government, the framework provides practical and scalable measures that organisations of all sizes can adopt to protect themselves from rising cyber threats.

Omotoso said the guidelines are particularly important as Lagos continues to grow as Africa’s leading technology ecosystem, attracting thousands of businesses and digital enterprises.

He noted that while this growth strengthens the state’s economy, it also increases exposure to cyber risks.

Citing data from the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), the statement revealed that Nigeria loses over $500 million (about ₦250 billion) annually to cybercrime, highlighting the urgent need for stronger digital protection systems.

The government explained that the new guidelines are available online and offer clear cybersecurity best practices for small businesses, large corporations, and Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

It also confirmed that the framework aligns with existing national laws and policies, including the Cybercrime Act (2024), the Nigeria Data Protection Act (2023), and the National Cybersecurity Policy and Strategy (2021).

Importantly, the state clarified that the guidelines are not compulsory regulations but advisory tools designed to help organisations strengthen their digital security based on local realities.

Lagos State also reaffirmed its commitment to building a safe and innovation-driven digital economy that encourages investment and public trust.

The government commended the Lagos State Cybersecurity Advisory Council, chaired by Prof. Fene Osakwe, for its role in developing the framework, while also acknowledging the contribution of the Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology, Mr. Tubosun Alake.

Officials said the state will continue to update and expand the guidelines as cyber threats evolve, ensuring that cybersecurity remains a core part of Lagos’ digital transformation agenda.
