Students of Lagos State University (LASU) have been encouraged to develop diplomacy, critical thinking and a strong sense of global responsibility as key skills for promoting peace and tackling modern international challenges.
The call was made at the 2026 Lagos State University Model United Nations (LASUMUN) Summit, organised by the Department of History and International Studies, with the theme, “Be the Light, Lead the World.”
The event brought together students to recreate United Nations proceedings, allowing participants to discuss global issues, improve leadership abilities and encourage dialogue on peace, cooperation and international relations.
While opening the summit, the Head of the Department of History and International Studies, Prof. Bashir Animashaun, highlighted that challenges such as climate change, economic difficulties, technological changes and conflicts across regions affect the entire world and require joint solutions.
Animashaun described the theme as a reminder for young people to take action, emphasizing that diplomacy remains a crucial approach to resolving disputes and strengthening cooperation among nations.
He encouraged students to view the Model United Nations beyond a classroom activity, describing it as an avenue to build lasting commitment toward global cooperation, sustainable development and peacebuilding.
The Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Prof. Ayo Ayodele, praised the students for displaying the values of diplomacy through their participation, noting that effective leadership requires service, integrity and knowledge.
Ayodele urged the delegates to continue developing communication skills, critical reasoning and diplomatic abilities, stressing that these qualities are important for addressing challenges both locally and globally.
Representing the United Nations Secretariat, Adeyemi Oluwabukunmi reminded participants that the organisation was created after major global conflicts to promote cooperation, justice and sustainable development instead of hostility.
She advised the delegates to approach discussions with respect and an open mind, noting that constructive debates and resolutions can contribute to positive change.
During the summit’s plenary session, students represented different countries including Nigeria, the United States, South Africa, Israel, China, Brazil, Ukraine and the United Kingdom. They debated issues such as terrorism, poverty, climate change, youth development and international conflicts, including the Russia-Ukraine war and Iran-Israel tensions.
The participants called for stronger global partnerships, dialogue and cooperation to address shared challenges and achieve sustainable peace.
The summit ended with cultural and musical presentations celebrating diversity, unity and peace, highlighting the important role young people play in shaping a more inclusive world.
