MALI IMPOSES CURFEW AFTER DEFENCE MINISTER’S KILLING; US URGES CITIZENS TO STAY INDOORS

The United States Embassy has issued a fresh security warning to its citizens in Mali, following a curfew imposed in the capital, Bamako, amid rising jihadist attacks.

In a statement released on Sunday, the embassy confirmed that movement in the city is now restricted between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., with the curfew expected to remain in place until the morning of April 28. It advised U.S. nationals to strictly obey the directive and stay updated through local authorities.

The embassy also warned of possible ongoing security operations and urged residents to remain indoors, stay alert, and avoid areas where military activity may be taking place.

The alert comes as Mali faces increasing security challenges following a wave of coordinated attacks across the country. Reports indicate that Sadio Camara, the country’s defence minister, was killed after his residence in Kati came under heavy attack.

Camara, a key figure in Mali’s military leadership and a central player in the coups that brought the current government to power, reportedly died from injuries sustained during the assault. The attack, which involved a suicide car bomb, targeted Kati—a major military base located close to Bamako.

The violence did not stop there. Armed groups launched simultaneous attacks in several locations, including Bamako, as well as northern cities like Gao and Kidal, and the central town of Sevare. The scale and coordination of the attacks have raised serious concerns about the country’s security situation.

Despite the unrest, Mali’s interim president, Assimi Goita, is reported to be safe.

International organisations, including the African Union and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, have condemned the attacks and called for urgent action to restore stability.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation as tensions remain high across the country.
