Foreign trade statistics compiled by the National Bureau of Statistics showed that apple imports were valued at ₦10.38 billion in the first quarter of the year, while apples and strawberries accounted for another ₦22.65 billion in the second quarter.

The figures cover the period from January to June 2026 and point to the substantial amount spent on importing the fruits within six months.

The development has also drawn attention to opportunities for expanding local fruit production, particularly in areas with suitable growing conditions. Increasing domestic cultivation could help farmers tap into the market and reduce dependence on imported produce.
