Army Confirms Death of Commander, Six Soldiers in Borno Terror Attack
The Nigerian Army has confirmed that a commanding officer and six other soldiers were killed during a terrorist attack on a military location in Monguno, Borno State.
In a statement on Monday, spokesperson for Operation Hadin Kai, Sani Uba, said troops of Sector 3 came under an “isolated infiltration attack” by terrorists at the Charlie 13 location late on Sunday, April 12, 2026.

According to him, the attackers engaged troops in a fierce gun battle but were eventually forced to retreat, with the military maintaining control of the position.
However, tragedy struck during a reinforcement effort when the commanding officer and his team encountered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) along the route to the frontline.
“Regrettably, the Commanding Officer, while courageously proceeding to the troops’ location to personally assess the situation, encountered an Improvised Explosive Device which severely affected his vehicle, leading to his death alongside six other personnel,” the statement said.

The Army said the officer was moving to assess the situation on ground when the explosion occurred, describing the incident as a painful loss.
It added that the late commander’s leadership reflected courage, selflessness, and a strong commitment to frontline operations.
Operation Hadin Kai expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing the fallen soldiers as gallant personnel who paid the ultimate price in service to the nation.
The latest attack comes just days after another senior officer, Brigadier General Oseni Braimah, was killed in a separate ISWAP assault in Borno State, underscoring the continued security challenges in the North-East.
