Nigerians in South Africa welcome Fani-Kayode’s appointment as ambassador
Nigerians living in South Africa have welcomed the appointment of Femi Fani-Kayode as Nigeria’s ambassador to the country, expressing optimism that his experience will help address challenges facing the Nigerian community.
The Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA), the apex body representing Nigerians in the country, conveyed the support in a statement signed by its President, Rev. Frank Onyekwelu.
NICASA said Fani-Kayode was assuming office at a critical period in Nigeria-South Africa relations, which it described as being under significant strain.
The association expressed confidence that his political experience, diplomatic exposure and knowledge of national and international affairs would help strengthen bilateral relations and improve the protection and representation of Nigerians in South Africa.
NICASA also acknowledged the efforts of Nigeria’s Consul General in Johannesburg, Ambassador Ninikanwa Okey-Uche, particularly her engagement with and support for the Nigerian community.
The group said greater cooperation between the ambassador’s office and the consulate would help consolidate existing progress while creating more opportunities for community engagement, consular support and diplomatic intervention.
NICASA said it looked forward to working closely with Fani-Kayode to promote unity, peace, security, development and the welfare of Nigerians across South Africa.
The association also highlighted social, economic and security challenges facing Nigerians and other foreign nationals in parts of South Africa, expressing hope that Fani-Kayode’s leadership would provide renewed direction and stronger institutional collaboration.
It assured the ambassador of its support and readiness to work constructively with his office to protect the dignity of Nigerians, promote Nigeria’s image and foster peaceful coexistence within South African society.
