The recent recognition of Pastor Enoch Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), at an international event in Washington, D.C., has reignited discussions about Nigeria’s diplomatic engagement in the United States and the role of influential Nigerians abroad.
The event attracted American lawmakers, diplomats, business executives, religious leaders and members of the Nigerian diaspora, highlighting the influence of Nigerians outside official government circles.

Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States, Ambassador Lateef Kayode Are, was represented at the ceremony by a member of his delegation. Although he only recently assumed office after presenting his credentials to U.S. President Donald Trump, analysts believe the early months of an ambassador’s tenure are crucial for building relationships and expanding diplomatic influence.
Observers argue that the evolving U.S.-Africa relationship presents Nigeria with an opportunity to strengthen its diplomatic strategy. The current U.S. approach places greater emphasis on trade, investment, conflict resolution and commercial partnerships rather than traditional foreign aid.

Experts say Nigeria must clearly define its priorities in its engagement with Washington by focusing on areas such as investment, technology, manufacturing, energy, security cooperation and critical minerals. They also note that without a well-defined agenda, diplomatic engagements risk producing little tangible benefit.
Nigeria’s diaspora in the United States has also been identified as one of the country’s strongest diplomatic assets. Nigerian professionals occupy key positions across global financial institutions, technology companies, universities, healthcare organisations and government agencies, while faith-based organisations such as the Redeemed Christian Church of God have built extensive networks capable of strengthening people-to-people relations.

Diplomatic observers have further stressed the importance of public engagement, pointing to former Nigerian Ambassador Prof. Adebowale Adefuye as an example of an envoy who consistently projected Nigeria’s position through regular interactions with policymakers, the media and the Nigerian community.

They maintain that Ambassador Are’s experience in intelligence and national security positions him well for the role, but insist that Nigeria must quickly develop a clear strategy that transforms diplomatic access into meaningful economic, political and strategic gains in its relationship with the United States.
