NRS Unveils New Tax ID System to Boost Transparency and Revenue Collection
The Nigeria Revenue Service has said its newly introduced Tax Identification framework is aimed at improving transparency, accountability, and efficiency in tax collection across the country.
According to the agency, the reform will strengthen the visibility and tracking of taxpayer information while helping to reduce leakages in the nation’s revenue system.
In a statement, the NRS explained that the new framework would harmonise taxpayer records across all levels of government, creating a more unified and reliable tax database nationwide.
“The system will improve transparency by enabling better visibility and tracking of taxpayer records while reducing leakages and improving accountability in tax collection,” the agency stated.
It added that the framework is part of wider reforms targeted at modernising Nigeria’s tax administration through digital technology and improved compliance systems.
The agency also announced that the new Tax ID platform would replace the existing Tax Identification Number Validation API currently used by Ministries, Departments and Agencies, financial institutions, and other organisations.
As part of the transition, organisations requiring integration or validation services for individuals, enterprises, and business names have been directed to contact the Standardisation and Modernisation Department of the Joint Revenue Board for access to the updated API and integration guidelines.
Similarly, institutions handling corporate entity verification have been advised to work with the Tax Automation Department of the NRS for necessary support and onboarding.
The reform is expected to support sustainable revenue growth while strengthening confidence in Nigeria’s tax administration system.
