The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has thrown his weight behind the governorship ambition of the state’s Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, ahead of the 2027 elections.

Obasa made his position known on Thursday during a visit by Hamzat to his official residence in Ikeja, describing the deputy governor as the most suitable candidate to succeed the current administration.
The visit is part of Hamzat’s ongoing consultations with leaders and stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as political activities gradually build up toward the next election cycle.
Speaking during the meeting, Obasa praised Hamzat’s track record in governance, particularly in infrastructure development, and commended his loyalty to the ruling party.
“I just returned from Abuja, and the conversation remains the same – Dr Obafemi Hamzat is the next Governor of Lagos State,” Obasa said.
“You have demonstrated unquestionable loyalty to our great party and even greater competence in serving Lagos, we will do everything to ensure that we win the election.”

In his response, Hamzat thanked the speaker for the show of support and acknowledged Obasa’s political influence and legislative experience.
He stressed that his consultations were focused on strengthening governance in the state rather than personal ambition.
“Lagos is a collective project, my consultations are not about personal ambition but about ensuring continuity, innovation, and inclusive development for our people,” Hamzat said.

The endorsement adds to the growing political momentum around Hamzat’s potential candidacy as stakeholders within the APC begin positioning ahead of the
party’s primaries.
