“OBI WAS NEVER COMMITTED” — BABACHIR LAWAL SLAMS ADC EXIT

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has criticised former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, describing him as “shifty” and questioning his loyalty to the party following his recent political realignment.

Lawal made the remarks during a television interview on Tuesday, following Obi’s exit from the ADC to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), alongside former New Nigeria People’s Party presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Obi and Kwankwaso had cited internal disputes and a tense political environment within the coalition as reasons for their departure.

According to Lawal, the party had long suspected Obi’s commitment, alleging that his engagement with the ADC lacked full dedication despite efforts made to accommodate him within its structure.

He claimed that the party even went as far as allowing Obi significant influence in internal arrangements, including participation in decisions around key administrative positions, in an effort to keep him within the coalition.

Lawal, however, argued that Obi’s eventual departure confirmed long-held doubts about his political alignment, suggesting that fear of internal competition may have influenced his decision to leave.

He maintained that his earlier support for Obi during the 2023 election cycle was based on temporary alignment of political interests rather than personal loyalty.

According to him, political alliances are fluid and often change depending on circumstances and strategic goals.

Lawal also stated that Obi’s exit from the party effectively ended any personal political support he had extended to him, stressing that loyalty must remain tied to party platforms rather than individual figures.

He downplayed the political significance of Obi and Kwankwaso’s defection to the NDC, arguing that such moves may not translate into a major electoral shift, as many lawmakers and supporters may choose to remain with their original parties.

Lawal further suggested that opposition fragmentation does not automatically guarantee advantage for the ruling All Progressives Congress, noting that electoral outcomes depend on regional voting dynamics.

Despite the political tensions, he reaffirmed his commitment to the ADC, stating that the party remains focused on building a structured and ideology-driven political platform rather than short-term political gains.

He added that decisions on zoning and presidential ticket allocation would be determined through internal party processes, including congresses and primaries.
