Deputy Superintendent of Customs (Pilot) Olanike Balogun has achieved a groundbreaking milestone, becoming the first female pilot in the history of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS). Her remarkable journey of determination and resilience has paved the way for breaking barriers in the aviation sector.
Born in Kaduna and hailing from Odo-Otin Local Government Area in Osun State, Balogun began her career in 2002 when she joined the NCS as a Customs Assistant. She initially served as a cabin crew member in the Service’s Airwing Unit.
From Cabin Crew to Pilot
Reflecting on her journey in a recent interview, DSC Balogun shared how her unwavering ambition, coupled with the support of the NCS, helped her transition from a flight attendant to a licensed pilot.
“Staying in the Service when many of my colleagues left for better-paying airline jobs was a tough decision, but I was determined to contribute to public service and fulfill my dream of becoming a pilot,” she said.
Career Milestones
Balogun’s career accomplishments are as inspiring as her journey. She holds an Advanced Diploma in Air Ticketing and Cabin Services, a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Ahmadu Bello University, and a Pilot Certification from the Flying Academy in Miami, Florida. The NCS fully sponsored her training, a testament to the Service’s commitment to advancing its personnel.

Balogun’s historic achievement as the NCS Airwing’s first female pilot serves as an inspiration to women within and beyond the Service.
“My role as the first female pilot in the Service reflects my commitment as a woman to advancing my passionate dream and enhancing the operational capabilities of the NCS,” she said.
