OPPOSITION FAULTLINES DEEPEN: ZONING CRISIS SPLITS COALITION AS OBIDIENTS DEMAND SOUTHERN CANDIDATE

The political conversation around Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election has intensified as supporters of Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso push for the opposition to adopt a Southern candidate as part of ongoing efforts to build a united front against the ruling party.

The call comes amid renewed coalition talks involving major opposition figures, including discussions aimed at presenting a single presidential candidate to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the next general election.

Peter Obi supporters, alongside allies of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, argue that political fairness and Nigeria’s informal zoning arrangement favour allowing the South to retain the presidency, especially since the current administration is already led from the region.

They insist that maintaining the zoning balance would promote equity, national unity, and political stability, while also reducing tensions between the North and South.

The debate follows a high-level opposition gathering in Ibadan, where key political actors reportedly discussed forming a unified platform to strengthen their chances in 2027. The meeting included prominent figures across different parties, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other senior politicians.

However, opposition parties remain divided on the zoning question. The African Democratic Congress (ADC) stated that it is not committed to zoning and would instead focus on selecting the most electorally viable candidate.

African Democratic Congress spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi said the party’s priority is winning elections, not regional allocation of tickets, suggesting an open competition based on strength and popularity.

Similarly, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) acknowledged zoning as an important political consideration but insisted that any coalition arrangement must balance regional fairness with electability.

New Nigeria People’s Party officials stressed that the ultimate goal remains defeating the ruling party, while still respecting Nigeria’s political diversity.

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) also noted that zoning is largely a party-based decision and not strictly constitutional, adding that broader political strategy will determine its final position.

Social Democratic Party leadership said it is too early to confirm whether it will formally join any coalition arrangement.

Supporters of the zoning push argue that rotating the presidency to the South is both a matter of fairness and continuity, while also pointing to Peter Obi’s reported willingness to serve a single four-year term as part of a possible compromise.

All Progressives Congress officials, however, have suggested that opposition coalition efforts may struggle due to internal disagreements and competing ambitions among key political actors.

Analysts believe the outcome of these negotiations could significantly shape the 2027 presidential race, but warn that deep divisions over zoning, leadership selection, and party interests may still complicate efforts to form a united opposition front.
