The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reported that 222 lives were lost, and 779 individuals sustained injuries in 304 road crashes across Oyo State in 2024. The accidents occurred in various locations within the state’s 33 local government areas.
Decrease in Road Crashes
Oyo State FRSC Sector Commander, Rosemary Alo, disclosed these figures in a recent statement, noting a decrease in road crashes compared to 2023. She attributed this improvement to the Command’s proactive measures and ongoing safety campaigns.
Leading Causes of Accidents
Despite the progress, Alo highlighted the persistence of risky driving behaviors, including overspeeding and the use of worn-out tyres, as the primary contributors to road accidents.
“Many accidents are preventable if drivers adhere to basic safety rules and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy,” she said.
Appeal for Safer Road Practices
The Sector Commander urged all road users to follow traffic laws and adopt safer practices to further reduce road crashes.
“We are committed to raising awareness about the dangers of reckless driving. However, achieving safer roads requires motorists and pedestrians to take responsibility for their actions,” Alo stated.
FRSC’s Continued Efforts
The FRSC in Oyo State continues to engage in public sensitization programs, emphasizing the importance of safe driving and compliance with traffic regulations. The agency appeals to the public to prioritize safety and make responsible choices to prevent avoidable tragedies on the roads.
