The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Shell Petroleum for finalizing the $5 billion Bonga North Deep Offshore Oil Deal after years of delays. The landmark agreement, expected to bolster Nigeria’s energy security, was commended for the diligence of technical teams, including those led by Petroleum Minister Sen. Heineken Lokpobiri.
Speaking at PANDEF’s Liaison Office in Abuja, National Chairman Ambassador Godknows Igali emphasized the forum’s support for initiatives aimed at increasing oil production, creating jobs, and driving national economic development. He noted that the Niger Delta people remain committed to collaborating with the government to achieve these objectives.
However, Igali called for strict adherence to environmental sustainability in the operation of the new oil field, referencing the 2011 Bonga South spill, which devastated several Niger Delta communities. He stressed that such disasters must not be repeated.
Igali also reiterated PANDEF’s demand for greater benefits for the Niger Delta people and communities, who have faced decades of environmental and economic neglect despite their significant contributions to the national economy. He urged Shell and the federal government to ensure the region benefits optimally from the investment, suggesting the establishment of new logistics bases in the area as part of the solution.
PANDEF affirmed its commitment to working with the federal government, regional political leaders, and community stakeholders to create a conducive environment for the oil and gas sector’s growth, ensuring it delivers sustainable benefits to the nation and the South-South region.
