#Protecting Our Children: Urgent Action Needed on School Oversight

The Lagos State Government must act immediately by shutting down the school in question until a full investigation is conducted. The teachers and management should be thoroughly evaluated, including verifying their qualifications and training. Far too often, incidents of abuse and misconduct in schools go unchecked, leaving children vulnerable to untrained individuals who should never be entrusted with their care.

Who ensures that these teachers possess authentic certificates? What professional training have they undergone to equip them for handling toddlers at such a critical stage in their development? Children up to the age of five are at an impressionable age, where their experiences shape who they become as adults. Unfortunately, many parents remain unaware of just how formative these years are.

The mental scars inflicted on a 3-year-old by such abuse are profound and lasting. This child may grow up with behavioral issues, potentially becoming a violent or aggressive adult, a wife beater, or even a criminal. The trauma of such early mistreatment can never be erased, and it is society that pays the price for failing to protect these young minds.

The State Government must intensify efforts to monitor and regulate schools, especially these mushroom institutions where such assaults occur. Proactive measures, including thorough inspections, teacher certifications, and ongoing evaluations, are essential to prevent further harm. It is far better to act now than to wait until a tragedy forces the system to respond.
