Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s return to the United Kingdom has renewed attention on the possibility of a gradual reconciliation with members of the Royal Family, although significant differences remain unresolved.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have returned to Britain with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, after spending about six years living in California. The family is expected to remain in the UK for an extended period, with their children beginning school in Britain.
The move has also increased speculation about Harry’s relationship with his father, King Charles III. Harry has maintained contact with the King in recent years, particularly following Charles’ cancer diagnosis, and the monarch is understood to be open to spending more time with his son and grandchildren.
A private meeting between Charles and the Sussex family during their July visit was seen by observers as a possible sign of improving relations. The meeting took place at Highgrove and was reportedly kept private.
Harry’s relationship with his elder brother, Prince William, remains considerably more difficult. The brothers have been largely estranged for years, with reports suggesting that William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, are taking a cautious approach to Harry and Meghan’s return. Recent reports indicate that there are currently no immediate plans for a reconciliation between the brothers.
The Sussexes are not expected to resume their former roles as working members of the Royal Family. Instead, their return is being viewed as an opportunity to establish a new life in Britain while maintaining their independence from official royal duties.
Harry and Meghan’s return could nevertheless give the family more opportunities for private contact, particularly between Charles and his grandchildren. Harry has previously expressed a desire for Archie and Lilibet to have a stronger connection with their father’s home country and royal relatives.
The couple’s relocation comes after years of tension following their decision to step down from senior royal duties in 2020 and move to the United States. Their subsequent interviews, Netflix documentary and Harry’s memoir further exposed divisions within the family.
While the latest developments suggest that relations with King Charles may be warming, the wider family rift has not been resolved. Any reconciliation with William is expected to take considerably more time and would likely depend on rebuilding trust privately before any public reunion takes place.
For now, Harry and Meghan’s return marks a new chapter for the Sussexes and creates an opportunity for closer family relationships, but it does not signal a full restoration of ties within the Royal Family.
