RUSSIA RELEASES LIST OF AFRICAN COUNTRIES ELIGIBLE FOR VISA-FREE ENTRY, EXPLAINS CONDITIONS

Russia has outlined the conditions under which citizens of selected African countries can enter the country without a visa, with the requirements varying based on nationality and passport type.

According to Russia’s official consular guidelines, only a limited number of African countries are covered by the visa-free policy, and most of the exemptions apply exclusively to holders of diplomatic and service passports.

South Africa is the only African country whose citizens can travel to Russia without a visa using any type of passport. South African passport holders are permitted to stay in Russia for up to 90 days for tourism and general visits. However, the exemption does not apply to those travelling for employment, education, or permanent residence.

For other African nations, visa-free entry is available only to holders of diplomatic or service passports. The countries covered under this arrangement include Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Egypt, Ethiopia, Gabon, Guinea, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, the Republic of Congo, Senegal, Tunisia, and Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe has the most restrictive arrangement, with visa-free access limited to employees of official Zimbabwean institutions operating in Russia who possess diplomatic or service passports.

For most African travellers, the policy means that a visa remains mandatory unless they are South African passport holders or qualify under the diplomatic or service passport exemptions.

In addition, travellers intending to work, study, or settle in Russia must obtain the appropriate visa, regardless of whether they qualify for visa-free entry for short-term visits.
