SEYCHELLES AND RUSSIA STRENGTHEN 50-YEAR EDUCATIONAL PARTNERSHIP AS MOSCOW HELPS TRAIN PROFESSIONALS

Seychelles is strengthening its long-standing relationship with Russia as both countries seek to develop skilled professionals and address workforce shortages through expanded educational cooperation.

The partnership builds on five decades of academic relations that began after Seychelles gained independence in 1976. Over the years, Russia and its predecessor, the Soviet Union, have helped train Seychellois citizens in several fields considered essential to the island nation’s development.

According to a report by Business Insider Africa, approximately 300 Seychellois have studied in the Soviet Union and Russia, acquiring expertise in areas including medicine, engineering, law, economics and public administration.

Many of these professionals returned home to contribute to the development of government institutions and other important sectors of the economy.

The two countries recently marked the milestone at a conference titled 50 Years of Friendship – From the First Seychellois Student in the USSR to a Common Future. The event brought together officials from Seychelles and Russian diplomats to reflect on their educational relationship and discuss opportunities for future cooperation.

HOW THE PARTNERSHIP BEGAN

After gaining independence in 1976, Seychelles faced a shortage of qualified local professionals needed to manage its institutions and support national development.

The government responded by sending students abroad for specialised education and training, with the Soviet Union providing an important avenue for acquiring the necessary expertise.

Dr Marina Confait, a human resource development consultant, said Russia had remained a strategic partner in developing the country’s human capital since diplomatic relations were established in 1976.

Seychelles’ Minister for Education, David Pierre, also described the knowledge gained through the partnership as an investment in the country’s future.

The arrangement helped build a pool of skilled workers whose expertise could be applied to public administration, healthcare, engineering and other critical areas.

DIGITAL EDUCATION AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AMONG FUTURE PRIORITIES

Beyond the achievements of the past five decades, Seychelles and Russia are looking to expand cooperation to meet changing economic and technological demands.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has indicated that both countries are committed to deepening their broader bilateral relationship.

Future areas of collaboration are expected to include digital education, artificial intelligence, joint research and science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

These fields are increasingly important as countries seek to develop technology-driven industries and prepare their workforces for changing labour-market requirements.

For Seychelles, strengthening technical education could help address shortages of specialised skills, reduce dependence on foreign expertise and create opportunities for local professionals to participate in emerging industries.

A LONG-TERM INVESTMENT IN NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The renewed focus on education reflects the importance of human capital in Seychelles’ economic development.

Although the island nation is frequently ranked among Africa’s wealthiest countries by GDP per capita when measured using purchasing power parity, maintaining its development will require continued investment in skills, innovation and institutional capacity.

By expanding its educational relationship with Russia, Seychelles hopes to build on the achievements of previous generations while preparing younger professionals for future challenges.

The effectiveness of the renewed cooperation will depend on how successfully educational opportunities translate into practical skills, stronger institutions and employment opportunities within the country.

For both nations, the next phase of the partnership presents an opportunity to extend a relationship that has lasted 50 years into new areas of science, technology and professional development.
