The Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC) has commended CMA CGM Nigeria Shipping Ltd. for its recent decision to eliminate container deposit charges for Nigerian shippers.
In a statement issued Thursday in Abuja, the Executive Secretary of the NSC, Mr. Pius Akutah, described the move as a significant, customer-oriented step that aligns with efforts to reduce trade barriers and promote transparency in Nigeria’s maritime sector.
According to Akutah, the policy—effective from May 21—demonstrates a commitment to fairness and will ease financial burdens on shippers while reducing disputes over container deposit refunds.

“The NSC lauds this initiative and views it as a milestone in ongoing efforts to reduce trade barriers, enhance compliance, and boost competitiveness at Nigerian ports,” he said.
He added that the removal of the container deposit charge reflects a broader industry demand for more transparent and cost-effective logistics practices.
Akutah also praised CMA CGM for taking customer feedback seriously, noting that such responsiveness should guide decision-making in the shipping industry.

“Policies shaped by customer and operator feedback are essential to streamlining operations, simplifying logistics, and improving service delivery,” he noted.
He urged other shipping companies operating in Nigeria to follow CMA CGM’s example by adopting similar customer-centric measures to promote transparency, fairness, and operational efficiency.
