SOLDIERS DO NOT BUY UNIFORMS OR BULLETPROOF VESTS – ARMY

Nigerian Army Denies Former Soldier’s Claims on Uniforms and Gear

The Nigerian Army has rejected claims by former soldier Rotimi Olamilekan, popularly known as Soja Boi, that troops buy their own uniforms and protective equipment. In a statement on Tuesday, Acting Director of Army Public Relations Appolonia Anele described the allegations as false and misleading, affirming that soldiers are adequately supplied and compensated.

The response came after Olamilekan went viral in an interview, alleging that soldiers use personal funds to purchase items such as uniforms, boots, and bulletproof vests despite modest salaries.

The Army clarified that personnel receive structured salaries, uniform allowances, and other entitlements, all paid directly into their accounts. Troops deployed for operations also receive additional operational allowances to support welfare and enhance effectiveness.

Addressing the core allegation, the Army stated:

“The claim that soldiers are required to purchase uniforms and protective equipment, including bulletproof vests and helmets, is entirely false. The provision of uniforms, kits, arms, ammunition, and operational gear is an institutional responsibility executed through established logistics systems.”

It acknowledged that some soldiers may choose to supplement their issued kits for personal comfort, but emphasized that this is voluntary and not indicative of any systemic failure. The Army also reassured the public that no soldier is deployed without adequate protection.

The statement urged citizens to disregard the claims, warning that unverified allegations could undermine morale and national security.

Regarding Olamilekan’s dismissal, the Army said he was removed for disciplinary breaches, including unauthorized media appearances and misuse of military identity, not for speaking out.

Olamilekan had earlier claimed that soldiers earn between N51,000 and N111,000 and must buy essential gear themselves, sparking debate online. The Nigerian Army insists these claims do not reflect reality.
