SUSPECTED HERDSMEN INVADE IMO COMMUNITIES NEAR FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY OWERRI, SHOOT COMMERCIAL RIDER IN THE HEAD

Attack by suspected armed herdsmen sparks panic in Imo communities near FUTO

Tension has gripped communities around the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) after suspected armed herdsmen allegedly attacked Eziobodo and neighbouring areas in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State.

Residents said heavily armed men invaded the communities on Wednesday night, targeting areas around Eziobodo, Ihiagwa, and connecting roads leading to the university environment.

Eyewitnesses claimed the attackers ambushed commuters and opened fire along Umuokwo Junction and adjoining routes, causing panic among students and residents.

Community sources described the incident as a prolonged attack, alleging that the gunmen operated for several hours with little resistance.

A commercial motorcyclist who survived the attack said he narrowly escaped death after encountering armed men along a bush path between Ihiagwa and Eziobodo. He claimed the attackers emerged from the bush and opened fire, injuring him in the process.

Sources further alleged that some people were abducted during the incident, while others sustained gunshot wounds. However, the full number of casualties has not been confirmed.

The Imo State Police Command described the incident as a “failed abduction attempt,” confirming that a victim sustained a gunshot injury and is currently receiving treatment in a hospital.

Police spokesperson DSP Okoye Henry said security operatives have been deployed to the affected areas, including tactical units tasked with tracking down the attackers.

The command assured residents that the situation is under control and that intelligence-led operations are ongoing to prevent further attacks.

Despite the assurance, residents have continued to express fear over rising insecurity in communities surrounding the university, calling for stronger security measures from authorities.
