Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has urged the Federal Government to ensure transparency and public involvement in the deliberation of proposed tax reform bills.
In a statement on Monday, Obi emphasized the importance of holding a public hearing before enacting the reforms to allow Nigerians across all sectors to actively participate in shaping the policy.
“Tax reform is a critical issue, and there is nothing wrong with pursuing it. However, such reform must be subject to robust and informed public debate,” Obi stated.
Balancing Revenue Goals with Public Welfare
The former Anambra State Governor stressed the need to strike a balance between the government’s revenue generation objectives and the broader socio-economic implications of the reforms.
“A public hearing on tax reform is essential, allowing Nigerians from all walks of life to engage meaningfully,” he added.
Obi cautioned against focusing solely on fiscal benefits, warning that neglecting the reforms’ impact on citizens’ welfare could undermine their effectiveness.
Call for Participatory Democracy
Highlighting the need for transparency and deliberation, Obi called on the government to adopt a participatory approach to decision-making. He argued that inclusive measures are vital to fostering trust and strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
“Transparency, deliberation, and public engagement must be prioritized to ensure tax reforms achieve their intended objectives without causing unintended harm,” he concluded.
Obi’s comments come amid growing debates surrounding the Nigeria Tax Bill 2024 and other related proposals, which have faced criticism for their perceived lack of consultation and potential socio-economic impacts.
