TINUBU APPROVES N15BN AS TAKE-OFF GRANT FOR POLICE ACADEMY IN OGUN

President Bola Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State, alongside a ₦15 billion take-off grant to support its development.

The approval was confirmed in a statement on Monday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, the funding will be drawn from the 2026 allocation of TETFund and will be used to develop key infrastructure, academic buildings, student accommodation, and training facilities at the new campus.

The decision aligns with the provisions of the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021, which allows the institution to operate multiple campuses across the country.

The Ogun campus was selected following a high-level consultative meeting involving the Minister of Police Affairs, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, officials of the Federal Ministry of Education, the Inspector General of Police, and the National Universities Commission.

The Presidency said the new campus is part of efforts to strengthen police training, improve academic standards, and expand capacity in response to ongoing recruitment into the Nigeria Police Force.

Currently, the Police Academy operates from its main campus in Wudil, Kano State, where it runs degree programmes in law enforcement and related disciplines such as law, sciences, social sciences, management, and humanities.

Established in 1988 and upgraded to a degree-awarding institution in 2012, the Academy has remained Nigeria’s only federal police university. The new Ogun campus will be its first satellite branch under the 2021 Act.

Lawmakers had earlier urged the Federal Government to decentralise the institution and establish campuses across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones to improve access and training capacity.

With this approval, the Federal Government says it is aiming to modernise police education and strengthen national security training infrastructure.
