Former Governor of Cross River State and former senator, Ben Ayade, has announced that he has withdrawn his ambition to contest the Cross River North senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections, following a directive linked to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In a heartfelt statement released on Monday, Ayade revealed that he was invited to Abuja for a high-level consultation at the Presidency, where he was advised to step down from the race. He said he complied with the request, describing the decision as emotionally difficult.

Ayade reflected on his political journey, noting his years of service as governor and his earlier tenure in the Senate. He also highlighted his contributions to strengthening the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South-South region, stating that he was the first APC governor in that zone and played a key role in building the party’s structure in Cross River State.

He further recalled his support for President Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election, claiming he was among the earliest governors to back his candidacy and promote his national ambition. Despite this, he expressed disappointment over what he described as a lack of federal recognition or appointment in recent years.
Ayade also appealed for reconsideration of the decision, arguing that the senatorial district deserves fair political balance, noting the long years his opponent has already spent in the National Assembly compared to others.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is said to have influenced the move as part of broader political consultations ahead of the 2027 elections.
